Bought an used Savage in 25-06 recently. I'm new to this caliber and need a little info. Nice shooting rifle and I really like the recoil. (have been shooting a 30-06). Is this a good whitetail caliber? Thanks.

yes, I think it is a good caliber for whitetail. I also have a 25-06 barrel for my tc encore but have not used it yet. A good friend of mine thats not around anymore used to use his for coyote's and said it was a great gun for them.

Anyone know if the barrels get 'shot out' quicker than other calibers?

25-06 is real close ballistically to the 243 its even slightly faster and flatter shooting than the 243 with the same weight bullets. Both are just about perfect for deer (whitetail and mulie) antelope and pigs. Barrel wear shouldnt be a problem because muzzle velocity never reaches over 4000 fps mostly around 3000-3400 depending on bullet weight

Never heard of barrel wear being a problem unless you don't clean it. A dirty barrel will wear out but a clean one hardly ever does even on a speedster like the .220 swift. .25-06 is a great hunting round for most of the stuff you will see in Oklahoma but I dont think it is legal for Elk. A well built bullet placed properly will send you scrambling for the cookbook.

Cleaning ASAP after it's been used whether it was fired or not will improve the function and expand the life of every gun. Dirt and debris will find it's way into the bore and action. Best to remove it sooner rather than later.
