if i was going to buy a rifle specifically for deer it would be a 243 but if you ever plan on hunting elk or larger game then i would opt for the 30-06. It's my personel go-to gun. I have taken lots of deer and pigs with it but can also shoot elk, bear, caribou, or moose with it if I get the chance.

.270 is a good caliber. I use a 30-06 for anything in this area. Guess one reason is I'm set up for reloading it and have been for 50 years.

If you can try to shoot a few before you buy one. Lots of options out there for calibers, actions, manufacturers, etcetera. My advice (+ $3.50 will get you a cup of Starbucks coffee) would be match the action to your hunting conditions, choose a reliable manufacturer and stick to a fairly common round. Unless you want to reload. Having said that, I've used Remington model 700, 788 Winchester 70, Ruger M77 and M77 Mark II in a variety of calibers to take different game from Pronghorn to 8" Brown Bear. I think the smoothest action of them all is the Ruger. But for the money you can't beat the Rem 788 if you can find one. They quit making them a long time ago.
