I like kaw WMA mostly because my in-laws live in Ponca so I can hunt there during the holidays we spend up there. It helps that I have seen some monster deer up there.

well, I have hunted a few different places. I really really like pushmataha they have excellent facilities. I have hunted Cherokee alot of times I enjoy going there its just easy to get there and very accesible. I have turkey hunted in Canton wma also it was alright but quite a few hunters around. Never deer hunted Canton though. I also have deer hunted at Black kettle and it was a really cool place it is wide open terrain with canyons its pretty rough walking. When we hunted there we saw alot of does not many bucks except at the check in station. There were some monster bucks some of those boys were checking in . I have hunted a few other places but these are the ones I like the most.

I like KAW WMA as well. There always seem to be ducks up there and we used to chase quail and rabbit around quite a bit. My parents live in Ponca since Dad retired so it is easy for me to access as well.

ECHIV, let me know the next time you might be in the area. Maybe we can meet somewhere and hunt whatever's in season at the time.

redmist, that is a deal. I am not sure when I will be out that way to hunt but I would love any advice you can give me on Snagging Paddlefish this spring. I will let you know next time I am out that way. I have kinfolk in Morrison, Ralston, Ponca and some other small towns around there and in NW Oklahoma as well.

Sounds good to me.
The water has to be just right at Kaw for the spoonbill. Snagging is finicky there, but when it's good, it's really good.

here is some little things that work well for me. I use a 13 foot eagle claw rod. with a salt water open face reel. The faster the retrieve on the real the better(less slack time =less hang ups) I use 50 or 65 lb power-pro line. Braided line has less stretch than mono so you get stronger hooksets. mono also becomes damaged easier if you bounce them off the bottom. 10 or twelve ought treble hooks (don't forget to close the barbs). trailed about 3 feet with a 3 oz bank sinker(2's don't cast as well and 4's sink to much) and oh yeah unless you want bruised ribs i take a towel and run it around the handle and tie it. (foam pipe insulation and zip ties work too. A little tip on reels get one that holds at least 150 yards of line. mine holds 300 that way if you break off your not respooling all day. I prefer open face reels due to simplicity. make sure it has a solid handle shank that goes all the way through the reel. If you buy a shakespeare or another type that just have the screw in handles you'll strip it out pretty fast. and set the drag heavy enough that it don't sing on the swing but low enough when you hit a fish he can take as much as he wants. This is a couple things i worked out for me over the years figured might save you some time. By the way once you get one you will be out there every spring. Good luck

my set up is a quantam spinning reel with 25lb big game and about a 10ft surf rod.. I like the 25# cause you can put more on your reel and it's a challenge too.. where I go we use 2 oz sinkers cause I dont have to cast but about 45-60 yards..
spoonies will be pretty thick up at kaw if this rain keeps coming.. There were a few 110's caught last year around the area I snag..

What part of kaw do you snag at?
