Anybody into shooting wild hog? I don't think they are too prevalent in N Central Oklahoma where I will be living but we that's why we use our vehicles.
Any advise as to best gun/caliber?

Guess the best question to ask how far you shooting and what size of hogs you going after. I have used every thing from a Bow to S&W 500. I like to test my self so I've found a .308 to work really good a long range putting rounds right behind the ear. "Put another bullet in the brain pain." What is the hunting situation like where you hunt? I believe the best Caliber depends on what hunting situation you find your self in.

I certainly should have been more specific in my post. I haven't hunted in Oklahoma, the last hog I shot was in Pennsylvania a few years back. I will be moving to OK later this year and would like to do a lot of hunting, wild hog included. I'll be in the Ponca City area but assume I'll need to travel some to get to a good hunting area.
All that said, I'm interested to know if there are exceptional areas for hog and what are suitable guns/caliber.
I'm happy to see you mentioned .308 for long range because I can do that.
Can you tell me more aout locations and any different gear/gun that I might need? Thanks!

I am located in the central part of the state. There are sevral good areas around the Cimarron River and around the Deep Fork River. I havent done a lot of hunting around the Ponca City but, the area around Kaw Lake is pertty good. They have some good public lands for deer. Some of the best places to hunt for wild hogs are private lands. If you can find an old dairy farmer or rancher who is having problems with hogs most of the time they will not have a problem with you helping them out with their hogs. Farmers around the central and souther part of the state are having alot hogs problems. this are the best areas i know of.
If you like hunting with a bow some land owners are more likly to let you hunt wiht a bow or cross bow then with a rifle or pistol. Hogs move a lot they my be in one area for a few weeks then you my not see them again in the same area for a week or more.

Thanks for the info. I knew the Kaw Lake area offers a fair amount of hunting and since I'm very very close I hope to take frequent advantage of that. I haven't hunted deer since I lived in Maine years ago. I actually prefer upland bird hunting over any other hunting but with more time I will probably do a little of everything.
Not sure if I mentioned this previously but a friend in Oklahoma hunts hog with a .22 mag. Not sure where but relatively close to Ponca City and rimfire is the only ammo permitted!!?? Based on what you tell me and generally what I heard from others, I will be going to the southern or central areas for hog.
I have been preoccupied with work so haven't stopped by recently. Thanks for the BD message. Has this board been more active than at present? I'll check in again
