I have been wondering what would good for a food plot? I have heard of all kinds of ways to plant but would like to know what everyone else is using.

This past year i ran a little experiment we had a plot of 3/4 oats and 1/4 brassicas and a plot of a wheat rye mix and a plot of cow peas. We didnt prep the soil with lime just tilles and spread. Although we got in late in the game the brassicas grew the fastest and leafed out well but were the only plants to get killed by the freezes. I would highly recommend if planted early enough for early bow. the wheat rye mix grew fast and had the most late season activity. We had good results on the peas but they took longer to grow. pigs also liked them the best. this year i will get them set up early as possible and use lime for soil prep. Prolly run the same experiment maybe mix it up a little

This year I planted a small food plot (15yrds x 30yrds) and I mixed biologic with this stuff from wal mart called hot spot, the hot spot had austrian winter peas in it so i picked it up, the clover and brasicas came up first.. The deer really didnt start hitting it until muzzleloader season.. I will definatly start planting earlyer next season.. oh ya rabbits ate the crap out of my brasicas too..

The tecomate seed company sells a perfect mix of austrian peas, chinese mung bean, honey clover, brasicas, and several wheats that grows fairly quick and even. It's planted by spreading it out over raked ground. Easily worked and good quick growth. That's what makes it perfect for someone like me with very little extra time to take care of it.
