It really depends on the animal for me. I have a 300+" set of Caribou antlers that are just antlers on a plate which look awesome. I also have an 8" Brown bear rug. For whitetail deer I have seen some shoulder mounts with the buck looking down and to his right that I really like. If I shoot an elk I will try to do it in full bugle. Antelope look really good at full alert and full body mount but that stuff gets expensive for this poor working man. Where did you get to hunt carribou? They are pretty high on my list of species I want to hunt. Bear is on my agenda this fall when I make my yearly trip to colorado to chase elk. You should post a pic of your hero shot with that bou. I sure would like to see him

I lived in Alaska for about 8 years. The funny thing about my Caribou Antlers is that I have no Pictures. I usually am simply a meat hunter. Kind of the "if it's brown, it's down" theory. So I didn't even have a camera with me. My Mom wanted some antlers so I kept a couple sets one year insteaed of just throwing them away. People started saying how nice they were so I kept these and gave her the smaller pair. A friend used to be a taxidermist and he did the mount for me for free. I will look into taking a digital picture and posting it on here if I can figure out how to do it. If you want any assistance on planning a trip, give me a PM and I will help as much as I can. I think you could self-guide and do the trip for $1500 and have a successful hunt. They are not that hard to hunt and easy to find. Some places in Alaska the limit for residents is 5 a day, 365 days a year. Of course nobody much lives there because it is so stupid remote and cold. They have to have them for meat. Which by the way, I prefer to Beef. It is crazy good.

Thanks for the kind words. I saw him about a mile off across Tundra and snuck up to about 200 yards for the shot. Those first three top tines are about 14" long or 15" Long. I wear a 44 suit coat and can fit my body inside the main beams. That shovel on the right is 20" from top to bottom along the outside edge. The circumfrence on the main beams 3/4 of the way out is about 9". The dark depends on when and where you shoot them. This one was in the Kuzitrin River Valley about 65 miles north of Nome and shot in Late October.
He had a cow and calf with him when I spotted them. I originally intended to shoot the cow, then the calf and the bull if it stuck around. When I sat down to shoot the bull stood up and shook his head. Right then I decided there was no way he was leaving that draw unless I drug/carried or 4 wheelered him out. One shot dropped him in his tracks.

man those are some gorgeous horns. Would love to have a freezer full of bou meat. I like elk betterr than beef also. do you think caribou is better than elk. are most caribou tags are over the counter? I also heard that there is a lot of public land and pipeline land that people can get on. Maybe if I can convince Jon and the wife and the coleman bros to pony up some dough we could do a trip. But ill do it alone if thats what it comes down to.

About 90% of land in Alaska is accessible to public either free or with a reasonable acess fee. Transportation is the really hard part. And by hard I mean Expensive. I always tell people that they can get the Alaska Fishing experience by standing in a tub half filled with Ice and the cold shower running. Then tear up a $20 bill every 30 seconds or so and quit when yu have had enough.
Elk is just about the best tasting wild game I have ever eaten. For a little over 2 years, the only meat I ate was stuff my friends and I either caught or shot. My favorites are Blacktail Deer, Dall Sheep. Elk, Caribou, Moose, Ptarmagin or Spruce grouse and Whitetail deer. I really like wild pig as well but haven't had a whole lot of it. Of course one winter in Nome we ate King Crab Legs 2x a week. I could get used to that again as well.
Like I said, Let me know when you want to start planning and I will help as much as I can.

I've got a friend with a plane and a pilot's license. Maybe that could cut down on the cost for us.

The problems with planes are transpo on sight -easily solved by renting but the biggest prob is the weight restrictions. most personal aircraft like cessna and pipers is that fully fueled the Can only accommodate about six hundred lbs of men and gear thats about two men and gear in. but what about the bou on the way out. Most of the local guides with planes up there round robin the gear men and meat out, but OK's a little to far for that. Prolly be better to take an 06 Chevy extended cab Z-71. white preferably (you know because of the snow) And I have heard from pretty reliable sources that elkaholic stickers are supposed to be good luck. Throw in a red trailer and a 4 wheeler. and your golden. But where in the world could we find such a rig?
