Jon was on his way home from work. He called and said the field just off of where I hunt had 2 does in it. He said he would watch the kids if I wanted to go. I threw on a green fleece shirt over the pink hoodie I had on and pulled my hair back in a pony tail and stuffed on a hat. Threw on some orange and grabbed my license and I was out the door with rifle in hand. Instead of coming in from the direction that he seen them I would have to go around and come in the back way which is the normal way I get to my spot. Jon asked if I wanted a ride part of the way so he took me up to the cattle gate and dropped me off. I jumped out and sprinted across one field. I put my rifle under the fence and pushed the bottom barb wire down an pushed through it. I grabbed my gun again and headed off south in the direction of the field. The wind was blowing pretty good from the northwest so I knew I couldnt get too far west or they would bust me for sure. As I went I scanned inside the treeline in case the big buck was in there or in case the does got bored with the field and headed north. I got to my normal spot and from there was extra careful on the placement of my footsteps. I got to a cedar and peeked through it. They were still there! Yes! I seen two of them. I picked out the larger of the two and put the crosshairs on her. I just watched her for a little bit and decided she was just a little too young for me to shoot. I lowered the gun and just watched her and all around her back into the woodline. I was disappointed that she wasnt bigger because I have hunted hard this year and have seen the movement of the deer go from okay...to not so good...to where the heck are the deer?! I thought..."you know what....screw her...shes meat" so I pulled the gun back up and placed her back in the crosshairs. She was turned a little off so I just waited for her to turn to a quartering to me shot. By then I was wobbley so eased a little deeper into the tree to get better leverage. I seen the smaller one playing next to the fenceline. She raised her head and I pulled the trigger. I knew I hit her a little further back then I had planned because I was shaking. The hunched over and ran towards the fence. I stepped out from the tree and watched where she was headed. When I did....I seen another slightly larger doe at the fenceline too and the little one. They looked puzzled but not scared. I called Jon to let him know I made the shot. He said he had driven back by there and seen 4 does in the field all about the same size. I waited for a while to give her time to pass and then headed in that direction. As I got to where she was I seen the 3 other does standing in the woods. This was exactly the same spot I shot my bow deer last year. In order to get to her I needed them to leave. I blew at them and they cocked their heads. I blew again and they took off back to the northwest. I climbed up onto a fallen tree and waited for Jon. He showed up and helped me get her out. The kids were ecstatic when I showed up. Brooke wanted to take pics with me and she went with me to tag it in while Jon stayed home with Lane.
This was the first kill of the season for me and Im excited about her. Dont think Ive ever taken a deer in jeans and diamond earrings. LOL! The batteries in the camera were dead so Jon snapped a pic with his phone.....
