I was up at 5:15 and out the door by 6. It was still dark but I could find my way easy enough. I was heading to the same spot that I killed the buck from last year and would have shot the one with my blackpowder had I made it all the way to the stand. I wore a lot of clothes because it was supposed to be cold. I have over half a mile treck and by the time I got there I was smokin hot. There was no wind at all. I set there watching the sun slowly light the land. I knew in front of me, before the farmers field, is where I had seen some bedding areas. I heard a shot at 7 and thought my FIL had shot but it turns out that it wasnt him. I seen a doe pop up outta no where....and a buck right behind her. They must have just gotten up and he was after her. He was facing away from me and I could see his rack out past his ears. I flashed back to last years buck as it turned away from me. Coming back to the present I knew he was one I would take if presented the shot. I wanted to take him before he got into the field. She was moving back and forth and he was watching her. He turned and headed to the left. I thought..."you stop and youre mine" I already had him in the crosshairs waiting for the opportunity. He cleared a cedar tree and I fired the shot. He took off and I listened for the crash. I called Jon and told him that I just got one and he asked if it was a nice one. We had both decided to wait for something a little nicer since we both had already shot some bucks this year. I told him it looked pretty good. As I was talking to him the doe came back around the cedar and stood there. I whispered "Hey, that doe just came back" He said "shoot her" I said "Okay, bye" She was completely oblivious to my presence...and unconcerned that her pursuer had just been killed. She was coming straight at me. She turned to my right and I shot her. She took off and I watched her disappear into a big cedar. I heard her crash. I called Jon back and he answered with..."did ya get her?" I said "Yeah" and he was on his way. I waited for him before going after either of them. As I waited....probably 5 minutes after the shot I heard the farmer starting to rattle again. I shook my head. I couldnt believe he was doing that after two shots. Had the deer made it into the field they would be his instead of mine.
Jon showed up and I told him that I heard the guy out there. He said we needed to hurry since he was gonna still try to make it to Sunday School. We found the doe first. She had ran head long into a big old cedar tree. This was as we found her............
Then we went to the spot where I shot the buck and headed in the direction that I seen him run. We walked up on him and snapped a pic before touching him............
This was just after we found him.........
We tagged them both in. I have been told numerous times today that I suck. I dunno...LOL!
Heres a couple more pics of them.........
Jon called to get someone to take over his class so he could help me and I do appreciate it.
I am very excited about this buck. He is so much like the buck I got last year....right down to the discoloration of the rack.
Something kinda cool to note.....I shot last years buck on the second day of rifle season on a Sunday. Same thing this year....and its the same genetics. Well...I think its cool...you might think its dumb.
