-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- here is some little things that work well for me. I use a 13 foot eagle claw rod. with a salt water open face reel. The faster the retrieve on the real the better(less slack time =less hang ups) I use 50 or 65 lb power-pro line. Braided line has less stretch than mono so you get stronger hooksets. mono also becomes damaged easier if you bounce them off the bottom. 10 or twelve ought treble hooks (don't forget to close the barbs). trailed about 3 feet with a 3 oz bank sinker(2's don't cast as well and 4's sink to much) and oh yeah unless you want bruised ribs i take a towel and run it around the handle and tie it. (foam pipe insulation and zip ties work too. A little tip on reels get one that holds at least 150 yards of line. mine holds 300 that way if you break off your not respooling all day. I prefer open face reels due to simplicity. make sure it has a solid handle shank that goes all the way through the reel. If you buy a shakespeare or another type that just have the screw in handles you'll strip it out pretty fast. and set the drag heavy enough that it don't sing on the swing but low enough when you hit a fish he can take as much as he wants. This is a couple things i worked out for me over the years figured might save you some time. By the way once you get one you will be out there every spring. Good luck

I've never tried during the spoonbill run. I've got some fat gar out of there in the off season, though. Might try it myself this year. They should be there.
