Never go into a battle with an untested weapon. Bad things can happen.

Hey, This will be my first time to go. I have access to a variety of shotguns so I will let you old timers and more experienced types make a recommendation for me. What pattern density do you recommend and what Range should I consider too far to shoot. I intend to kill a bird not wound it or scare it silly.

I use a mossberg 500 12ga with a 28 inch modified choke. I use 3inch 2oz mags #6 Federal premium shells. I am very confident out to 35 to 40 yards with my shotgun. I like to call them in close. This set up has killed them every time for me.

rhythm and knowing when to call is the most important part of learning to call in my opinion..as far as a shotgun goes, i have a mossberg model 88 maverick too..its a modified choke which will do fine.. if you scout your birds and figure out there routine you wont need to do much calling at all.. just get in between where they are and where they want to be..

I agree. Too much calling or calling in a bad rhythm will spook an older bird. In the fall season jakes will come in to just about any loud noise, but most of us want that old fantail ghost that drums and drags his beard just out of range. A good purr will usually help to close the distance.

on an older dominant bird use a strutter decoy.. I will never not use a strutter ever again...I had 3 longbeards last year during the youth only season break off of 15 hens and run about 250 yards across an open field to my strutter decoy and knock it over.. then i had it happen again in western oklahoma too.. these didnt run as far but still broke off of about 20 hens to come whip my decoys butt... Turkeys are very teritorial, if they see a new bird in town they want to establish dominance with that new guy and believe me , they'll come in a hurry looking for a fight!! Use an old fan on a wooden dowel or buy a b-mobile decoy believe me you'll see your succes improve
