I am looking forward to this year as well. This will be the first time I've tried Turkey hunting. I drew for the Cherokee GMA Controlled Hunt. I plan to be there at noon on Friday and stay until I get a bird down.

ECHIV,
I have been trying to figure out how scan a pic of the map for you but my scanner software stinks.
I hope to figure it out soon for you. When I took my son up there for the youth deer hunt we went in the gma and looked around and I marked it on the new maps they have down there.

jn, Thanks for the map. I found it today on my email. I hadn't looked in the places you had marked. I will give it a try. I shot a doe in there in 2006 on a controlled hunt and thought I might hunt around the same food plot area if I saw any sign. Thanks again for the tip.

Cant wait polly gone to try a weekender down south eats this year. any body know any good public land where the easterns arent to scarce. I hunted at James Collins a few yrs ago got right on some big ol' Gobblers down there. I have a map here at the house and have it marked from when I was down there and where we heard and saw most the turkeys. It seemed that they talked alot more at that time in the mornings than the evenings. Let me know if you want to look at the map. Jon

I hunted James Collins on a controlled hunt this year, didnt see any birds though.. seems to me it looks like the birds would be down on the south east side of the wma around all the pines.. thats a really cool wma.. I've always wanted to give the easterns a shot.. they seem alot more challenging than the rio's

Never shot an eastern sure would like to though. If we could work out a weekend to go I would love to go back down there. The one I killed in there had a 9.5 inch beard. I killed him on the first morning I got to hunt in there. We were working in McAlester and that morning they were calling for rain so we went in there to hunt and had a awesome morning. We got back in to McAlester around 10:00 and went to work. Jon

Nice Tail Fan and Beard mount. Who did it or did you do it yourself? Yeah, I done it myself, once you figure out where to cut the fan off its pretty easy. The first Turkey I killed I tryed to cut the fan off and did just that I cut most the feathers off...LOL Jon

actually as far as using heavy loads i Hunt turkeys with 3 inch #6s which are actually pheasant loads. I tried heavier loads but my gun didn't pattern as well. You might try a verity of loads different guns like different ones but I would definitely pattern out some good sixes against what you have been shooting i have tried them on several different shotguns and they usually have more bb's in the kill zone.

I use an Accuchoke super full and 2X4 Winchester in a 12 gauge. The pattern is awesome. Only use lead shot, though. Steel shot ripped the choke threads out of a friend of mines shotgun. The choke landed about 15 yards away and the end of the barrel resembled an old blunderbust. He had a nasty bruise for a while.
