I went out turkey hunting for my first time ever this past spring. We got up at 4:30am on April 7, 2006 and got ready and headed out to the woods. We got there and got set up before the birds were off the roost and listened to them answer us for a while. We could hear at least 3 toms. They were very responsive on the roost but when they hit the ground they went silent. It was 10 minutes before we heard another gobble. My husband let out a series of purrs and yelps and at that moment we heard them gobble and knew we were still in the game. We anticipated the turkeys to come to the right so we had set up for that...but they didnt do that. We seen 2 jakes headed in from the left. They were slightly out of range and disappeared into the woods behind us. We were able to maneuver into a shooting position as they walked away. So once again Jon and his friend did a series of soft clucks and yelps, and the jakes turned on a dime and came straight to us at a fast pace. I had them beaded up as they approached and they stopped just in range. The target lifted his head looking for the hen and that was his mistake. I gently pulled the trigger and it knocked me on my back.... I heard the guy that was with us say "She got him...hes down". I had killed a jake, and I was very excited to harvest my first bird. This happened fairly early so I got to carry him for a few miles so the boys could get their shot at one but we were never able to call another one in.

I decided that I was going to try and do the mount myself even though I had never even attempted one and I was pleased with how it turned out...... ~wife
