I can finally stop kicking myself for passing on a 130" class 9 point buck 15 minutes into opening morning.
I went hunting with my dad on the morning of the 29th, and had set up for a 420 yard shot down a gas line cut-away. I started out in the prone position facing north. At about 7:00am it started to pour down raining so I got up to move under a cedar tree ten yards to the south. before I got there a doe busted out into the cut-away about 40 yards to the south. I squatted down hoping she wouldn't notice me. While she was bouncing back and forth in the clearing I heard my first ever snort wheeze from behind me.
I turned my head to see a fairly impressive 8 point standing not more than 25 yards past where I had just left looking at me. While watching him and trying to figure out how I was going to turn around to take the shot I heard another snort wheez back where the doe had been.
I turned and saw a bigger buck was walking stiff legged with his lips curled back. He wasn't very happy about the smaller buck interupting his quality time with the little lady, and didn't care if I was in the middle of the opening or not.
I raised my rifle, sighted in, and fired a shot. He just stood there looking at me without even flinching. I reloaded and he started to run. Just when I fired the second shot he fell down and I completely missed. I reloaded again as he entered the wood line.
He stopped about 20 yards in but I could only see his rear end sticking out from behind a tree. I watched in the scope as he started to stagger and fell down. That's when I realized that my first shot had been true.
I waited a few minutes until he had stopped moving and went to see what I had got. I was very happy to see it was a massive 16 point with 2 tripple eye guards that were both over eight inches long.
