I almost gave up. Today is the last day of ML season this year and I didnt know if I would get to go or not. I stalked up on a doe earlier today which was freakin awesome so I was pumped. I definitely wanted to go tonight but had a class at church and didnt know if Jon would be home from his ML trip. He called and said he was on his way home so I made some venison stew and brownies for his arrival. He got home and ate and I called to get someone to take over my class. I wanted to go because it was beautiful. Raining...but gorgeous.
I got dressed and headed out to the woods. I decided to walk to my stand (because of the stalking thing earlier) LOL. It was a fairly good walk but I wanted to use my new found stalker skills. I slipped into the woods and headed towards a dry creek. Once I got to the creek edge I realized it was steeper than I thought. I tucked the ML under my arm and slid down the bank like a kid. ;D I headed back towards a fenceline because it would be easier walking and quiet. I crossed the fence and begin heading up the line. I knew to be on the look out because the deer frequent there and there is deer sign everywhere. I went down a gully and heading back up I seen three big does take off tails waving. They didnt look overwhelmingly concerned so I waited for a sec to see if they were coming back. They didnt so I headed again watching where they ran to. I seen them again and again they took off. Well...that did it. I needed to get to my stand as soon as possible so I picked up the pace. I walked as quickly as I could but still placing my footsteps to make as little noise as possible. I walked right by where I shot my buck last year and smiled and looked up towards where I needed to be sitting. I was headed to the same spot that I took last years buck. Well...almost there. Lets see...where is that spot...
I rounded the edge of the tree line. The tree line kinda comes to a point and thats where I position myself. I came around and THERE HE WAS. I was out in the open....surely he is gonna see me and take off. He wasnt concerned in the least with my presence. I was standing there looking at him...hoping that he wasnt gonna take off. He was walking slowly with his head down and then back up. He looked at me at least once as I raised the gun but still no reaction from him. I had him in my crosshairs. I bleated and he stopped and looked again. I fired the shot! When the smoke cleared...he was going down. He staggered around a bit and hit the dirt. He tried to get up but it wasnt happening. He went down. I called Jon as he was kicking around and told him. I dropped to the ground and waited for Jon to bring the 4wheeler. We got him out and tagged in.
He was an 8 point and weighed 100 lbs dressed.....
