Come on everybody, get some talking started. Archery Season is merely days away. Dove season is open but the birds are gone for the most part. What animal is your favorite trophy and why. Was it your first deer? First animal with a bow? Was it a "booker" of any sport?
My favorite is an 8" Alaska Brown Bear that I shot on Power Creek outside of Cordova on a self-guided hunt. The reason why is pure adrenaline. Not only were my buddy and I completely stoked over this bear (a 19 year old dry sow I found out later) but we were bluff charged by an even bigger bear while we were skinning her. In fact he was present while we were waiting for a shot on the Bear I harvested. It started snapping it's Jaws, popping it's teeth and growling and huffing at us right after I finished shooting. We found out the next day that the Bears behavior indicated it was letting us know how big he was while deciding whether he wanted to fight us.

Wow...I have so many "favorites" I remember each of them vividly. I would say my first deer because I was 15....or my bow deer from last year because it was such an amazing experience and my dad had just bought me a decked out Mathews Mustang and my lifetime hunting license. It was like a pay off to get that deer....and it was for my dad. But....I think my true trophy is the one I had mounted from Nov 05. The reason why is because I had hunted for eleven years and not been able to get a deer. I had actually seen very few while hunting and was a little discouraged with the sport. As I had given up on this particular days hunt I turned expecting to see my FIL but instead seen this beauty. I was able to set up on him and fire the shot without him even knowing I was there. This seemingly broke my "dry spell" and I had a TREMENDOUS season last year including my first turkey, my first bow deer, my first muzzleloader deer and my first ever doe. Im looking forward to this season but I can tell you with all that and the added pleasure of our son getting his first deer.....last year will be hard to beat...... The deer that broke the spell....... ~Linet

I would have liked to do a full mount on that Bear but the price was prohibitive and I have moved 6 times since that Bear was taken. I also don;t have room for the mount. Nose to tail was about 8 feet long and takes up most of a room. Standing full body mount would require about a 12 foot ceiling.

yea i guess that a full mount is only a good decision if it is permitable but that don't change the urge to get the bear

ECHIV, I may get a chance to hunt bear in Minnesota during the 2008 season. Who did your rug and about how much does it cost?

redmist, you're giving me a senior moment. I shot that bear in 1994. Art Hirschel in Gakona, AK did the mount but that is a long ways to go for a rug. If I remember right it was just over $1,000. The price is determined by the size of the bear most of the time. Tanning Fees go up on bigger rugs. Check out some taxidermists around Bear states and in Minnesota. Don't forget that Arkansas has a growing Bear Population and some good taxidermists. Shipping fees can run the price up on you. Don't save money by getting a cheap mount though. That's no good for anybody and doesn't show respect for the trophy.

Redmist,
I forgot to mention one other thing. I have seen some bears that looked good with a snarling, threatening mouth. I have seen a lot more that looked stupid. I chose open mouth rug but not snarling. The ones that looked good snarling were exceptional trophies and excellent taxidermy work. That is a tough look to capture. Also none of the snarling bears that looked good were Black Bears.

I've seen a few cartoon looking bears myself. Yours looks pretty nice. I also like the border.

This is my favorite trophy. It's got 16 points, and I killed it last year while hunting with my dad.
