Anyone hunt the Stillwater/North Central OK area for ducks?
I am headed down that way on the 18th, to get one last hunt in before I start preping for Snow Geese here in Nebraska.
Just curious. Many birds still around? Open water?

I hunt about 8 miles south of Stillwater. See alot of mallard, teal, and a crapload of gadwall. The canadian honkers are also hitting the short green fields all day long. I don't hunt big lakes though, but from what I can tell, Sooner lake is a hot spot this year.

redmist,
all I hunt is private ponds right near stillwater, got about half a dozen I can hit. Usually one of them has ducks coming to it.
Do you live in Stillwater?

No sir. I live in Tryon. It's about 20 minutes south of Stillwater. I love pond hopping with a shotgun or a fishing pole. I plan on going again this Tuesday and/or Wednesday. Good luck to you.

Yea, I know where Tryon is. I was raised in Stillwater, just moved away to get a job.
You ever set dekes out on any of your ponds? Sometimes that can be the best shooting, especially the first hour of daylight.

I'm going to set some up tonight after dark. Plan on blasting some quackers and honkers tomorrow morning.

(and a phone video of me stripped down swimming through ice to retrieve some quackers that fell in the wrong area).

Red,
sounds like you need a dog, or just some waders and a fishing pole like I often use

Hindsight is 20/20. Would love to have a good dog and left the pole at the house this time.

I used to have a duck dog. Believe it or not it was a Brittany! She was a duck retrieving machine!
She put a few Labs to shame we hunted with. It was almost comical, to see a Brit out retriving a Lab in water. She is still alive but now retired. I bought another Brit after her, but she isn't near the bird dog and all but refuses to do water retrieves.

Yea, several guys sneered when they first saw her. Until those ducks started hitting the water!
She would even get Canadas. Of course over water. She would just get behind them take a little bite and push them along in front of her.
I knew I had a good dog when I took her out at 4 months of age to "observe" while we hopped a few ponds. My brother and I dropped 3 ducks, and I was just about to pick up my fishing rod for a retrieve when SPLASH, in she goes and one at a time brought back all 3! Unbelievable, may never have a dog like that again.

Good luck trying to find one.
I've never had a decent retriever of any kind.
