I was talking to some people about what the hardest fighting fish was blue cat or spoon bill. I was wondering what your thoughts were on it. I told them it was all in the size of the fish and the type of water you are fishing in. But there is some thing about hooking in to a good spoon bill in fast moving water or a monster blue below a dam can make any anglers heart race. Redmist and I are going on a fishing trip next week and are going after both of this monsters. Hopefully we will have some good pixs for are trip to post when we get back.

After the initial hook set spoonbill become more of a dead weight being pushed by a lot of water. I prefer the fight of the blue cat. I'll let you know next week when we get back.

Well, the spoonbill trip wasn't what we were hoping for. We drove all the way to the Grand River by Locust Grove just to find out the water was up about 50 feet. The water was over the road a quarter mile before the parking area. We ended up driving all the way to Kaw and camping for the night. The water there was about 6 feet low and they weren't running like they usually do this time of year. We were there for 2 days and only saw one spoonbill, and it was only 22 pounds. They guy that got it said he had spent all day snaggin' for 4 days and it was the only one he got. We didn't catch any catfish either. It was still fun, though and I plan on going back up there sometime in the next week.
I snagged a lot of gar, caught some crappie, and caught a decent sized striper by the dam so the trip wasn't a complete waste.

Red,
If you hear/see the snagging getting good at Kaw. PLEASE, let me know. I want to come down from NE and hit it this year, but if I am driving that far I want to make sure the trip is worth it!

spoonbill are staging in the deeper holes 15 to 20 miles below kaw , a good friend of mine caught the potential state record down there and released her, took three guys to land the fish.. I'll try and find the picture of it, the fish are there, just get below the dam and find the holes they are trapped in.. also heard of another that went 95 that was released also...

glad to hear the run isn't over yet. I haven't had a chance to come over and fish but might get to do so in the next couple of weekends.

I'm going back on Monday. I know where some deeper holes are up there. I'll let you know how it goes. This time we had the wives with us so we set up camp by the dam and stayed in that general area.

It's not really a run, they're just trapped in the holes in the river.. there's a couple holes that you can drive up to the river and just wade down there to them..

about the fight, i agree 100% with redmist, after about 5 minutes with a spoonie its like your pulling in a log.. the blue cat is the better fight pound for pound hands down..
