I currrently shoot a .452 300 grain Hornady xtp with a MMP sabot. I can get 50 rounds for $18
My wife shoots a .458 250 grain Barnes Triple X with a Harvester sabot. Her rounds are little more expensive: 20 for $27. BUT those barnes all cooper rounds are amazing! There penteration knows no bounds!
BTW, I HATE powerboobs, I shot several and had complete failure when shooting deer. Those things came apart like a dead grasshopper.

Last year I got a buck with a power belt. It hit the top of the spine and traveled about 18 inches down the spine. When I dug the bullet out it still had 199 grains of weight. Great penetration and weight retention.
You obviously know more about the art of muzzleloading. Any advice for a lover of the sport that doesn't have the time for self testing.

redmist,
Some people swear by powerboobs, I have had terrible experiences with them.
I know this, IF you ever go elk hunting with your ML, I highly suggest you DO NOT use a powerbelt. As I have heard many horror stories.
I believe powerbelts load easy and shoot GREAT, at least they did in my guns, unfortunately the terminal ballistics I have seen were poor. No exit wounds and IF the bullet hit bone it would often cause complete disengration of the bullet. This is just my experience. I realize that these bullets have and will continue to kill many deer.
Some of my favorite rounds are made by Hornady, T/C (also hornady with T/C name on it), and my absolute favorite are Barnes and Knight rounds made by Barnes. They are expensive, but man are they awesome. Wife was shooting 175 grain Knight red hots out of her .45 and that little all copper round would completely pass thru the largest bucks Nebraska has to offer.

Thanks. Do you prefer sabots or not. Yes, currently the wife and I shoot smokeless muzzleloaders and they will shoot conicals, but it isn't the reccommended load The only time I shoot conicals is when I am elk hunting with my Omega, as sabots are outlawed in Colorado.

I read that when a sabot round reaches around 2200 FPS it gets deformed, causing the shot to fly wide. Do you know anything about that. Granted 2200 FPS is a lot for a muzzleloader, but I like to push the limits on distance.

Well, I haven't heard about velocity being an issue with sabots, only a hot barrel deforming them and causing accuracy problems. When shooting smokeless its usually best to wait between shots at the range or you may get fliers, same could happen with a regular ML if the barrel is hot. One place to ask that question is here: www.modernmuzzleloader.comThe guys on that forum have lots of good info and have much more knowledge than I do in the subject.

I've also used them but when I saw the platinum power belts I tried them and liked the results just as well.
